The 2024 election, which resulted in Donald Trump winning over Kamala Harris, has influenced many Americans’ decisions about relocating. A survey by Redfin reveals key trends about who is moving, where they are going, and why.
2024 Election Results Drive Moving Decisions
According to the survey, 22% of U.S. residents are now more likely to move because the election is over. Of these, about 36% are considering moving to another country while 26% are thinking about moving to a different state. However, not everyone is feeling the urge to pack up, and 21% of respondents said they are less likely to move now that the election is over.
The survey also shows differences based on political party. Democrats are more likely to consider moving post-election than Republicans. 28% of Democrats say they’re more likely to move compared to 16% of Republicans. Additionally, 59% of Democrats who are thinking about relocating post-election are considering leaving the U.S., compared to just 8% of Republicans.
Young Adults, Renters, and Lower-Income Earners Lead the Moving Trend
Certain groups are more inclined to move after the 2024 election. Young adults aged 18-34 are the most likely, with 34% saying they’re now thinking about a move. This rate goes down with older age groups, with only 9% of people over 55 expressing the same sentiment.
Renters are also more likely to consider moving than homeowners. Almost 29% of renters said they’d think about relocating, compared to about 15% of homeowners. In addition, those who earn less than $50,000 per year are more likely to consider moving than high-income earners.
The Housing Market and 2024 Election Results
For some, the election results have increased interest in real estate. About 17% of people who are more likely to move after the election are thinking about buying a home. However, 13% are now more likely to rent and 12% are considering selling their current home.
First-time homebuyers were particularly influenced by the 2024 election. Many had stopped their plans because of uncertainty, but are now looking to move forward. Some buyers are specifically waiting to see how policies around affordable housing will affect them under the new administration.
Why People Are Moving After the 2024 Election
For those considering relocating, the election has reinforced existing trends. Political polarization in the U.S. has led some to look for areas that align more closely with their values. For instance, 27% of Americans said they would hesitate to live in a neighborhood where residents don’t share their political views. Additionally, state laws on key issues, such as women’s health, vary widely and may be important in these decisions.
Moving trends post-election reflect how politics can impact major life decisions. Whether people are crossing state lines or considering a move abroad, these shifts highlight the deep connection between personal values, policies, and where people want to live.
